Donald Trump Mocked for Video of Him Walking Down Stairs

Donald Trump has been mocked on social media for the way he walked down a flight of stairs in a video posted on Monday with people saying, “he is too old.”

The former president was filmed leaving Hotel Fort Des Moines in Iowa on Monday. Monday kicks off the primary elections, with Iowa caucusgoers casting their vote for the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential race. Trump, the GOP front-runner, he has an impressive lead among his Republican opponents in Iowa with 52.7 percent of voter support, according to poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight.

In a video shared by Senior Congressional Correspondent for ABC Rachel Scott, which was then shared by others online, Trump is seen descending the hotel staircase, holding onto the railing as he descends and looking down at the steps. At the bottom of the stairs, he said, “I think we’re going to have a tremendous night tonight. The people are fantastic. And I’ve never seen spirit like they have.”

One of those who shared the video was Bloomberg Reporter Stephanie Lai, which prompted Democratic Strategist Adam Parkhomenko to react to the video, writing on X: “A very weak and feeble Trump.”

“Trump flew to Iowa on Saturday, and in that time he’s done 1 rally, 1 virtual event and a pizza photo op. Now on caucus day he didn’t leave his hotel for the first time until 2pm Iowa time…and he can barely descend a flight of stairs,” X user @SwissWatchGuy wrote. “He is too old.”

The former president had to cancel a few rallies over the weekend because of the harsh winter weather in Iowa. Meanwhile, on Sunday he delivered several pizzas to the local fire department in Waukee, Iowa.

X user @MTRBassman posted: “Get that elderly man a stair lift.”

“Holding onto the bannister [sic] for dear life,” X user @EmpressLAQ wrote.

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s campaign via email for comment.

Age and fitness have been a major talking point of the 2024 election with Trump being 77 years old and Joe Biden, the Democratic incumbent, being 81.

Biden has also been mocked for tripping on the steps of Air Force One multiple times. In February, a video circulated online of Biden tripping while walking up the stairs of his airplane on a trip to Poland around the first anniversary of Russia invading Ukraine.

At the time, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., wrote on X, “Oops he did it again. Our president seems incapable of getting up a flight of stairs. This is the guy leading us into WWIII… what could go wrong?”

In a theoretical match between Trump and Biden in the general election, Trump has a slim 2-point lead over Biden (50 percent to 48 percent), according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. The poll was conducted from January 10 to January 12 with a sample of 2,870 U.S. adults and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 points.
